Nan
The misty valleys in the North
Words & Images — Sara Ananrojwong
The misty valleys of Nan remain the most memorable image from my visit to this northern city of Thailand, where the town is nestled within a vibrant natural landscape. The scenery along the roads unfolds as long, continuous lines of landscape, framed by layered mountains receding into the distance.
During winter, the view remains predominantly green, shaped by the consistent tropical rainforest climate, where temperature and humidity stay relatively stable throughout the year. The sound of trees gently brushing against one another in the wind, and leaves moving softly as they touch my skin, created a sense of deep natural retreat—almost as if the environment itself was breathing around me.
Beyond the landscape, what stayed with me most was the way living culture emerges directly from nature. Open-air architecture and the traditional “เติ๋น” (terraced veranda space), often covered with light canopies, reflect a vernacular way of living in Northern Thailand. These spatial forms are deeply influenced by Lanna culture, where architecture does not stand apart from nature, but exists in continuous dialogue with it.
In Nan, I felt time, space, nature, and life becoming indistinguishable. There is a stillness in the place that feels deeply dynamic at the same time—a condition I find myself resonating with.

Reflecting on my life in the north of the UK compared to the north of Thailand, I am struck by how different climates shape perception. Although the contexts are distant and distinct, both places reveal a relationship between life, place, and time that feels quietly connected. The botanical character of Nan, together with its layered mountain landscape, also evokes a subtle reflection of Scotland. In both environments, there are moments where nature becomes legible again—where form, atmosphere, and distance feel clear and intentional.
In these moments, time seems to slow. Natural forms become more defined. Daily life and rituals appear more deliberate, as if people are living in closer awareness of their surroundings.
