Snowdrop
A Winter Walk Through Cambo Gardens
This winter, I had the joy of visiting Cambo Gardens in Fife, Scotland, for their Snowdrop Festival (Winter 2024–2025), and it felt like stepping into a quiet fairytale. It was likely my first time seeing snowdrops in real life, and I couldn’t stop admiring how tiny, charming, and peaceful they looked. Their soft white petals swayed gently
in the cold breeze — like nature’s whisper that winter is slowly making room for spring.
There were more varieties of snowdrops than I could count. Cambo Gardens is home to over 200 species, many of which begin blooming as early as November. Some had delicate double-layered petals, while others featured beautiful green hearts on snowy white blooms. It was such a wonderful experience to see them up close.
What fascinates me most about snowdrops is how they flourish in winter. They are a quiet sign of spring on its way. I also discovered other lovely winter-blooming flowers at Cambo, expanding my understanding of what can thrive during the colder months
Beyond the snowdrop trails, Cambo offers a rich and thoughtfully curated landscape. Each corner of the garden seemed to carry its own character — from dense woodlands and winding paths to a gentle stream humming in the background. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and notice the beauty in small things.
Cambo Garden is part of Cambo Estate, which is included in An Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland as a significant example of a picturesque, model estate, and it truly lives up to that title.
As someone working with flowers, the experience left me deeply inspired. Seeing how Cambo celebrates seasonality, natural textures, and gentle storytelling through plants reminded me why I began my journey in floristry: to notice, to create, and to share beauty that is rooted in time and place.
Snowdrops:
- Galanthus nivalis (Common Snowdrop)
- Galanthus nivalis 'Flore Pleno' (Double Snowdrop)
Other Winter Flowers:
- Leucojum vernum (Spring Snowflake)
- Eranthis hyemalis (Winter Aconite)
If you’re in Scotland during late winter, I highly recommend visiting this hidden gem in Fife.
